Glossary
Key terms used in ventilation and climate systems.
- Air handling unit (AHU)
- A central unit that filters, heats or cools air and distributes it through ducts.
- Blast freezing
- Rapidly lowering product temperature to −18 °C to preserve quality.
- Chiller
- A central unit that chills water or glycol and circulates it through the building.
- Compressor
- The core part that compresses the refrigerant and circulates it.
- Condenser
- The heat exchanger where the refrigerant releases heat outdoors.
- Evaporator
- The heat exchanger where the refrigerant absorbs heat from the space.
- Fan coil unit
- A unit with a fan that heats or cools a room using hot or chilled water.
- Heat recovery
- Using the heat in exhaust air to pre-heat or pre-cool incoming fresh air.
- Inverter
- Technology that adjusts compressor speed to the load, saving energy.
- kW and BTU
- Units of cooling and heating capacity. 1 kW ≈ 3,412 BTU/h.
- Multi-split
- A system with several indoor units on one outdoor unit.
- Refrigerant
- The fluid that carries heat in the system, e.g. R410A or R32.
- Smoke extraction
- A system that removes smoke and toxic gases from a building during a fire.
- Split air conditioner
- An air conditioner with one indoor and one outdoor unit.
- Ventilation
- Supplying fresh air to a space and removing stale air.
- VRF (variable refrigerant flow)
- A central system that varies refrigerant flow to control each room's temperature separately.
- Waste chute
- A vertical shaft in a multi-storey building that carries waste from each floor to a collection room.
